So now that things are finally winding down for the semester and we only have one more day of class, I think it's fair to say that this has been a good semester. In English anyway.. Whitby has been a great teacher and made that morning class fun. The only downside is I have to write 10 of these posts.. Almost there! But I feel like this English class has not only learned a lot but gotten to know each other personally unlike most other classes I am taking. It's been a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteKind of spinning off my previous post, Do you agree that it is important to have personal interaction with other students both in and out of the classroom? I feel that it keeps students involved and more excited. Agree?
DeleteRobert K.
DeleteAbsolutely. Maybe not important, but certainly beneficial.
Yeah i agree with you Tim! I think it keeps us more involved with things going
DeleteCarly Lloyd
DeleteI think it's very important to have a personal interaction with everyone in the class. Especially in a class where participation is important. We can learn so much from each other.
I also feel that incentives toward the end of a long, grueling semester are extremely important in regards to our future educational success. My proposal to Prof. Whitby is that the class should have breakfast together on Monday in the classroom. Everybody bring their own, Prof. Whitby don't worry, I'll get yours. And instead of facing another painstaking task like writing a final paper, we'll just enjoy the last little bit of time we have together and socialize a little bit. Maybe talk about summer plans and things like that. Seems how most of us will probably never see each other again I feel like that would be a far better use of our time than writing an argumentative essay...
ReplyDeleteI like this idea a lot. I'm not so sure how it will go over with the professor...
DeleteAnd I agree that Prof. Whitby has done a great job teaching this class. The class was one of my favorites and getting everyone out of their shells with the presentations was fun. Inter-personal interaction is definitely a good thing!
I agree with this! that would definitely be a nice incentive, however i dont think everyone would show up. And yeah she was a great teacher i really enjoyed her too, she didnt make the class too stressful, yet we had enough work to keep busy.
DeleteMy question is, Who agrees that we should spend the last day doing something like having breakfast together instead of schoolwork? What are some other benefits from this type of activity as a group of students?
ReplyDeleteRobert K.
ReplyDeleteI'd much more prefer to have a multiple choice or even short answer test, but i think that this might be a better way of testing our english 1010 skills. Any thoughts?
Carly Lloyd
DeleteI would love having a multiple choice or short answer test over writing an essay. But the whole class has been centered around building our writing skills. What better way to test what we've learned then write?
I would much rather do what we are doing. I dont know, in this class i think we need to apply the skills we learned by writing and that it would be hard to take a multiple choice test about everything we learned. Also, we have been writing so much that i feel much more comfortable with it now
DeleteWho in our class feels like they have been over-parented? Were your parents overprotective or did they let you make your own mistakes? And how will the way you were raised affect the way you in turn will raise your own kids?
ReplyDeleteCarly Lloyd
DeleteHi Cami! I don't think i was over Parented in anyway. My parents method was a good mix of being strict and being too lenient. They didn't restrict me so much that I wanted to rebel but they weren't so easy going that I never knew about consequences. I was given the right to make my own decisions but warned I had to live with the consequences. I plan on raising my kids exactly the same way. I think it was a great method. How about you? Did how you were raised affect how you are raising your kids?
I dont think i was over-parented. My parents have been divorced since i was young, so that probably had to do a little with it. My mom grew up with a super strict mother and she always knew that she didnt want to have the same parenting style. She had rules, but they werent super strict or anything. Also, she trusted me and let me make my own mistakes (not that i did anything real bad) and i learned from them. I feel like if i did have really strict parents then i probably would have rebelled or something because you can only take so much structure and discipline.
DeleteDo you really think that watching T.V. makes you smarter? I haven't read the article yet, but for right now I have to disagree. To me the T.V. seems like a brain sucker. People veg out in front of a screen and waste so much time!
ReplyDeleteCarly Lloyd
DeleteCami, I both agree and disagree with whether or not TV makes you smarter. I think it has everything to do with whatever you are watching. When I was little i would wake up early and watch saturday morning cartoons, Pokemon is not an example of an educational show. But what about the shows on the history channel? Or Animal planet? I think it's all about the shows that are watched.
Kaitlyn Carlson
DeleteI think that t.v. makes you smarter, being that i am a avid t.v. watcher, there are many shows that can make you think and expand your mind. Even reality shows such as survivor can make you think.
Like professor Whitby said i think it depends what you are watching. Obviously reality TV will not make you smarter (even though i love it), but i think that some shows can make your brain think differently and it ways you normally wouldn't. Many shows on the history channel or discovery health really teach you a lot about things you might not have ever learned before. I have definitely learned some interesting facts from watching TV shows like that before.
DeleteI agree with you somewhat, but what about Jeopardy? Wheel of Fortune? Or Who Want's To Be a Millionaire? I think there are T.V. programs out there that can make people smarter. Can anyone think of any other reasons how T.V. can make you smarter?
ReplyDeleteQuestion, Is there hopr for American marriage? Honestly i think there is hopr for ammerican my grandparents have been married more then 50 years with no affair. I am so glad that my grandparents are part of my life being a good example to me for being in love with no affair. Have you asked your parents have you really been with mom for so many years with no affair? are scared to ask? haha i would hesitate to ask my father or mother that! tell me what you think..
ReplyDeleteI think there is hope! and i think a lot of people want to believe that they can make it 50 plus years too. Sometimes reality kicks in and people just realize that their spouses change but i still have hope and it helps when you have good role models around you to show you that it can work. Nowadays it seems like everyone is cheating, but i think people who have hope can make it work!
DeleteWhat final exam article did you choose to write for on Monday? I still have not decided on what one i should pick to wrtite about. Any ideas? that would be helpful..
ReplyDeleteYou should chose the American marriage one and include your grandparents. It seems like a interesting article.
DeleteDo you really think that TV makes your smarter? Do you turn off your TV and think WOAH I have gotten some intelligence from this TV series? Honestly i do not think that TV makes you smarter, everything on TV is a little pointless besides the news and Dr. Oz. I perfer reading books then watching TV... what do you think?
ReplyDeleteHaha i never really thought about it like that, im usually not like wow i just got smarter from watching that but i do enjoy watching TV and learning little facts here and there. I dont think books necessarily make people smarter than watching TV, unless you are reading an encyclopedia or something. Whether you are watching a documentary on TV or reading one, most likely they will contain just as much information and personally i prefer watching television rather than reading books.
DeleteCarly Lloyd
ReplyDeleteIs there really no hope for American Marriage? Or does America just need to change it's view of it? I think that there is nothing wrong with marriage in American and it's just in the way it's viewed now days. I don't think marriage is look at as being as binding as it did 50 years ago. Back then problems were worked out and divorce wasn't top of the list for solving problems. I feel like marriage has slightly lost its credibility. It's not thought of as being as sacred and a lifetime commitment anymore. What do you guys think?
Kim Collings
ReplyDeleteDo you guys think that fiction is the better option for reading? Do you agree that fiction books make you brain and imagination go wild and you will enjoy reading the stories more? I think that non-fiction is also good, but it is harder to make true life events into fun imaginable stories. Fiction, I think, gives people a place to go in their minds when there is no where to go in real life.
I don't know if fiction is better than non-fiction but i definitely think it makes your brain think differently and make your imagination better. I love fiction and as a kid i loved reading books that were fiction because it made me think differently. It is also more fun to read and more enjoyable!
Deletethats a question that seems like comparing apples and oranges. Because both fiction and non fiction are beneficial to the brain but in different ways. if your talking about imagination and expanding your mind in that sense than of course non fiction is better. But if you want facts and historical events and learning about that it's obvious what the better choice is. Just seems hard to compare to me.
DeleteCarly Lloyd
ReplyDeleteHow do you guys feel about all the new technological ways to read books? would you rather read a book on an electronic device? Or is being able to hold the actual book better? I personally am all about reading the actual book. I can see how having an electronic device can be super convenient but it's just not the same.
personally i think that using technology in any school environment is beneficial to both the student and the teacher because it allows for more conveniences and educational advantages that weren't there before.
DeleteThe article on if TV makes you smarter is interesting. My thoughts on it is TV can make you smarter. When you watch TV you can learn many new things even if your not watching a educaional show. Of course reading a book or studying will make you learn more than watching TV. But at the same time watching TV makes you learn more compared to Playing video games or a sport. It just depends on what you compare it to.
ReplyDeleteWhats some the thoughts on social networks are popular due to our social class and that it controls which network we use to communicate with each other?
ReplyDeletehow many of you feel that the outlook on marriage has changed since 30 yrs ago and what do you feel has changed since then?
